Richard Carroll was born in Birmingham. At the age of 15 he moved to London to study goldsmithing. With his father's money he opened a jewellery shop, which was later named Caiman's Jewellery. To develop his enterprise Carroll travelled a lot. He spent two years in India, visited gold and platinum mines in South America, mostly in Colombia and Peru.
